The Miner: Issue 9
Hello beautiful people! It's time for your weekly dose of OMG, LOL, and WTF in influencer marketing.
It's 2020. The year we have perfect vision, the year of hindsight, the year we continue to put more energy into the things we love and less into things that do not spark joy. I'm excited and based on your IG posts you are too!
Starting with the next issue, I'm going to write little letters here before getting into the links. So if there's something you'd like me to talk about, let me know.
I hope you enjoy this week's edition and don't forget to tell your friends. Hit "reply" with any and all feedback and if you read a good link send it to info@carbonaugust.com. Here we go!
💎 Whether you're producing a live event or attending one on behalf of a brand, getting your story game together can be tricky. But this article may be the silver bullet you're looking for. From how to set up your stories and which Canva template to use, to CTAs and retargeting those who engaged through ads, this post has you covered.
💎 We're one week in and here come the top 2020 influencer trends. I could summarize this list, but it was so good I'll just be hitting copy/paste all day. If you've been reading The Miner, many of these trends may not be new, but we all could use a refresher. I also love this list that says the industry is "on the brink of explosive growth." This is the news I love to hear!
💎 It would be irresponsible of me not to mention that the Army has banned TikTok. Buuuuuut when even Vogue is writing about how TikTok girls are the biggest beauty influencers for Gen Z you maybe turn a blind eye? Unless your phone has government secrets on it. Then I can't help you.
[Less than 2 weeks until I touch down in LA and less than 4 weeks until Atlanta. If you don't have tickets to my brand building workshop I would get on it before they sell out. I'm also headed to Dallas, Chicago, and Montreal so I'll see you on the road (or in an airport!)]
💰 “If you have at least four per cent engagement. You can ask for (a fee based on) about four per cent of your following per Instagram post,” she says. “That is the starting point.” @TorontoShay is one of my favorite influencers because she is brilliant and she is lovely. She drops a few gems in this article and talks about a day in her life. Oh and she quit her job in influencer marketing to be an influencer. So obviously #GOALS.
💰 Brands are looking to build more long-term partnerships with influencers regardless of follower count. This would be a great time to make sure your skills (design, creative direction, etc.) and offline talents (public speaking, event hosting, etc.) are fresh because they will matter more in the upcoming quarters. When a brand like Revolve has to explain influencer marketing 101 to investors even though influencers drove 70% of their sales, you know the stakes are about to get higher. 2020 is going to be all about omnichannel marketing so make sure Instagram isn't 100% of your influencer portfolio.
💰 If you love video, but have been dragging your feet on YouTube because it's hard to grow, think of this influencer who gained 1.5MM subscribers in one month. Do you need to shower in your van to achieve the same feat? Maybe, but you should check out these influencers who are growing like crazy and how they created their business models.
💰 The biggest chunk of influencer marketing is in the US, but it's starting to boom in other markets. The UK is slowly starting to catch up and there will be more opportunities there. I can tell based on where they're translating my book (China, Vietnam, Philippines, Brazil, Germany, Serbia), where people are trying to get their hands on it (Australia and Nigeria), and where it's already be pirated and translated without permission (Iran I'm looking at you) that the global takeover is coming. You guys have a significant head start. Make it count.
[Was your 2020 resolution to book a personal coaching session with me? Let's get on the phone and chat about those goals!]
⚫ No bad news this issue. Let's start it off on a positive note. Plus I think people are on vacation and haven't had a chance to act a complete fool on social. I'm sure there will be something next week!
[This year is going to be all about community so make sure you join the Carbon August facebook group and take advantage of it.]
That's it for this week's edition of The Miner. Don't forget to tell me your thoughts and share this issue on social! If you loved it you can buy me a coffee!
